Which one of the following animals has two separate circulatory pathways?

(A)

(B)

Frog

(C)

Lizard

(D)

Whale

NEET - Medical UG-2015 Hard

Answer & Solution:

The correct answer is (d) whale.

Whale is a mammal. Mammals show a type of circulation known as 'Double circulation'. Two separate circulatory pathways are found — systemic circulation (blood passes through the body) and pulmonary circulation(blood passes through lungs). This is possible by the presence of a complete 4 chambered heart with separate left and right side compartments. Oxygenated and deoxygenated bloods received by the left and right atria respectively pass on to the left and right ventricles. Thus, there is no mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated bloods.
