The types of ribosomes found in prokaryotic cell are …………

(A)

100 S

(B)

80 S

(C)

60 S

(D)

70 S

K-CET-2011 Easy

Answer & Solution:

Solution: 70S

Ribosomes are organelles present in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells .Prokaryotes have 70S (where S=Svedberg units) ribosomes while eukaryotes contain larger 80S ribosomes( in cytosol) and eukaryotes have 70S ribosomes in mitochondria and chloroplasts( if present). The 70S ribosome is made up of a large 50S and smaller 30S subunits. Each of these subunits of ribosome further consists of rRNA subunits and ribosomal proteins The 50S subunit contains the 23S and 5S rRNA while the 30S subunit contains 16S rRNA.
