(A)

Endosperm

(B)

Embryo sac

(C)

Embryo

(D)

Ovule

NEET - Medical UG-2017 Hard

Answer & Solution:

The correct answer is embryo sac.

The process of formation of megaspore from megaspore mother cell (MMC) is known as megasporogenesis. A single MMC differentiates from the nucellus in the micropylar region. On meiosis, MMC forms a tetrad of megaspores in which the four megaspores are arranged linearly. Out of the four megaspores, only one remains functional whereas other three degenerate (Monosporic development). The functional megaspore later develops into the female gametophyte or embryo sac. Therefore, functional megaspore is the first cell in the development of female gametophyte in angiosperms. Embryo sac has a unique arrangement of cells and nuclei i.e, there are 8 nuclei but only seven cells.
